Meknes, Morocco

Hey Folks!

My imperial city tour brings me 1 hour east of Fes to Meknes. Like Fes, Meknes' main attraction is the Medina. Much smaller and easier to navigate the Medina is a charmer. Most Moroccan cities have two interior areas, the Medina (old city), and Ville Nouville (New city).

My second day I did a tour of the Medina's manufacturing section. It was quite neat seeing how people still use an anvil and blacksmiths hammer.
I also visited the mausoleum of Mouilay Ismail who fended off some amazing empires. The Brits, fierce Berber tribes and the Spanish all relinquished lands to this great sultan. I found it amusing how he fathered literally hundreds of children.

My last night in Meknes I was able to capture a great celebration on the streets of the old city. I think it was a birthday party for a 1 year old. Musicians surrounded a highly decorated horse drawn buggy. Around the buggy was a procession of singers, dancers and locals. It was just so culturally dense. I didnt take any photos of the celebration just video.

Until next post,

D.
